Orthodontics

Crooked teeth don't just affect the look of your smile. Malocclusion can cause teeth grinding (bruxism), TMJ disorders, and even pain.

By undergoing an orthodontic procedure with Dr. Iven Gonzalez, you can enjoy a straighter smile and enhance your oral health.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?

The length of an orthodontic procedure can vary from person to person. When treating minor gaps and crowding, treatment may only take a few months to complete. However, a more pronounced underbite, overbite, crossbite, or open bite could take more than a year for an orthodontist to properly align.

During your visit to our El Paso practice, we can provide a general estimate of how long it will take to complete your orthodontic treatment.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works...

The Cost of Orthodontic Treatment Price and Payment Information

Factors That Affect the Cost of Orthodontics

Severe malocclusion often requires longer treatment as well as a more complicated and expensive approach. The type of orthodontic treatment also matters. Traditional orthodontics with metal braces is usually more affordable than tooth-colored, lingual, and clear braces.

Insurance Coverage for Orthodontic Procedures

Your dental plan may cover orthodontics. It's important to check with your insurance provider for coverage and benefit details. Our team can offer assistance with this process, and provide the necessary documentation for your orthodontics coverage.

Financing and Other Payment Options

If you do not have insurance or orthodontics is not covered, we can go over various payment plans. Flexible financing for braces and other treatments is available through CareCredit®. We want you to find the right path to straighter, healthier teeth.

Different Orthodontic Procedures Traditional Braces and Other Options

Metal braces

Traditional Metal Braces

Orthodontists have used metal braces for decades. They are one of the most reliable options for repositioning misaligned teeth, which is why metal braces are still in use today. The bands, brackets, and wires work in concert, applying steady tension to shift teeth into a more ideal position.

Porcelain braces

Porcelain Braces

While traditional braces are effective, they leave many patients feeling self-conscious during treatment. This is why orthodontists developed porcelain braces. Made from ceramic and tooth-colored materials, these kinds of braces blend in better with a patient's teeth. The brackets are not as noticeable, even when a smile is viewed up close.

Invisalign

Invisalign

Invisalign is the most well-known clear aligner system. It uses clear plastic trays to gradually shift teeth into an optimal position. Each computer-designed tray is worn for two weeks, at which point patients switch to the next tray in treatment sequence. The clear aligners are easy to remove, which allows patients to eat their favorite foods and practice good oral hygiene with ease. In addition, the clear trays are virtually invisible. You can undergo orthodontic treatment without most people noticing.

Invisalign or Braces? Comparing Orthodontic Procedures

Despite the long track record of traditional braces, adults and teens often come to our El Paso practice looking for information about Invisalign. The clear aligners are more aesthetically pleasing and convenient, but this alternative to traditional orthodontics has some drawbacks.

Invisalign is limited in the amount of movement it can achieve. Traditional braces are generally better at treating major malocclusion. Invisalign is simply not designed to treat severely crowded and rotated teeth.

Given these facts, Invisalign needs to be considered on a case-by-case basis. During your consultation with Dr. Gonzalez, we can go over which treatment is most ideal for your needs.

The Orthodontics Process Placing Braces and Maintaining Results

The length of an orthodontic procedure can vary from person to person.
The length of an orthodontic procedure can vary from person to person.

Consultation and Planning

During the initial consultation, we will take x-rays and perform a full examination of your teeth. Dr. Gonzalez can then discuss your oral health goals and develop a custom treatment plan.

Placing Spacers

To position orthodontic bands around the molars, orthodontists will place spacers between the teeth at the back of the mouth. This is done about a week before the brackets are placed.

Placing Brackets, Bands, and Wires

Orthodontists carefully adhere the brackets onto the front of the teeth and place bands around the molars. The wire will then be placed to apply controlled tension along the dental arch.

Adjustments and Checkups

Over the course of treatment, patients return to the practice for checkups so we can monitor their progress. Adjustments can be made to the wire and other parts of the braces as needed.

Debonding and Retainers

With your teeth straightened, the braces can come off. Once the brackets are removed, an orthodontist can then take impressions to create a retainer. Whether fixed or removable, the retainer maintains the results of orthodontic treatment.

The Benefits of Orthodontics
